Review: 1982 VAZ 21033 – Lada 1300 for the Soviets

Everyone knows it by its export name, Lada, but its real name was VAZ and that is how it was commonly known in Soviet Union. Like all other Soviet automakers, VAZ is an acronym and it stands for Volzhsky Avtomobilny Zavod, or Volga Automobile Plant. This is not to be confused with Volga cars which were made by GAZ, Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod or Gorky Automobile Plant, some 600 kilometers southeast. The 2103 model, like all Ladas in this series, 2101 through 2107, is based off the 1966–1974 Fiat 124 Special. Designed to be the car of the people, in its transformation from Fiat to VAZ, the vehicle lost most things that could have been described as a luxurious. Furthermore, the body and chassis were modified to withstand the harsh Soviet climates; thicker steel, better heater, increased ride height, and a newer Fiat-designed engine. The 2100-series VAZs and Ladas, also known as Classic, Riva, Signet, Laika, or Kalinka depending on the market, were produced from 1970 until 2012 in Russia, and the 2107 is still in production in Egypt! The VAZ 21033 pictured here is one of the more rare models. The 21033 was a less expensive version of the basic VAZ 2103. The differences between...

Drawing on many years of framebuilding experience, including seven at a well-known Sussex-based titanium specialist, Mark Reilly’s new brand Reilly Cycleworks aims to offer custom made bicycle frames with a choice titanium, steel or carbon fibre. The company, comprised of Mark Reilly, Damon Fisher and Neil FitzGerald, was briefly known as Nerve Bikes – road.cc even tested their first carbon fibre model – but after getting a lot of demand for Reilly branded frames from a growing customer base, they decided to switch names. “It’s a decision led by our customers,” says framebuilder Mark Reilly, who has been building frames for 30 years and lists Tour de France and Olympic champions among his customers.  “We’ve always made the bikes that our customers want so, when they started asking to have Reilly on their frames instead of Nerve, we had to agree that they know best.” With two workshops, one in Brighton and another in Brackley, Reilly aims to offer customers a choice of materials. From titanium and steel, made in Brighton, and carbon fibre, made in Brackley, drawing on the wealth of Formula 1 expertise in that area. Whatever the choice of material, the ...

About 30 members of the local business community, including ambassadors from the Covington-Tipton County and South Tipton County chambers of commerce, attended a ribbon cutting for a store just west of the Covington Square called Mother Nature’s Helpful Hemp. But on Friday the event’s attendees mingled, drank bottled water and munched on hot dogs and vegetables like they were in a new real estate office or beauty shop. Lori Delashmit, who co-owns the store with Brandy Scott and Stanley Scott, who are married, told a story that received a good laugh from the assembled group. It was about an elderly woman who asked about the after-life ramifications of patronizing the...

Please read the rules before joining the discussion. In the corner of a spacious pool house in Detroit’s Historic Boston-Edison District, where Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. once entertained music royalty, hangs a photo of Gordy himself, laughing with pop superstar Michael Jackson.  The picture, situated in the very spot it was taken decades ago in the 1980s, is one of dozens of images that hang throughout the “Motown Mansion,” the home Gordy owned from the 1960s through the early 2000s. The photos tell the story of a place that’s more than a house. It’s a legacy. “There are many beautiful homes in Detroit,” said new owner Alan Brown, who bought the mansion in 2017. “There are a small number of truly historic mansions with the design integrity this has, but there’s only one Motown Mansion that has this legacy attached to it.” “I can’t tell you how many people drive by, stop and want to chat about their connection to Motown,” said Brown, an arts consultant who shares the house with his partner Aldo ...

The bounty of microgreens and radishes will be given to YellowBird Foodshed, a community-supported agriculture (CSA) share program. The organization aggregates locally grown produce from farmers around the state and then sells it to customers along the I-71 corridor.  Monday’s harvest signified an important step in the expansion of a microfarm project that began in 2017 in an unused parking lot of the joint college campus. Where North Central State College once held its rib...

Toronto, Ontario–(Newsfile Corp. – June 12, 2019) – Seabridge Gold (TSX: SEA) (NYSE: SA) announced today that it is in the final stages of determining targets for the first drill program on its 100%-owned Snowstorm Project in Northern Nevada. Drilling is expected to begin before the end of the third quarter of this year. The estimated 7,000 meter program will test for evidence of a Turquoise Ridge/Twin Creeks type of high grade gold system in what appears to be a continuation of the Getchell Trend on which these successful deposits are found. Twin Creeks and Turquoise Ridge are respectively located about 6 and 15 kilometers southwest of Snowstorm (see map below) with Turquoise Ridge reporting remaining reserves of 9.1 million ounces grading 13.0 g/T gold and Twin Creeks 3.2 million ounces grading 1.9 g/T gold. Rudi Fronk, Chairman and CEO of Seabridge Gold, commented: “This type of system has been our top priority for exploration since acquiring Snowstorm in 2017. Significant work remains to be done but we have made good progress in identifying the stratigraphic and structural hosts of a Getchell-style deposit at Snowstorm. Although this type of deposit h...
