LEDs deliver significant gains in light quality, move toward CSP future (MAGAZINE)

Since our last roundup of packaged LEDs, color quality and performance has changed dramatically. While there are still many commodity low-end LEDs and glare in some products remains an issue, there are far more premium-quality LEDs on the market. At the same time, the SSL industry is moving toward enhanced mid-power packages and chip-scale package (CSP) technology for many applications and stretching quality improvements across the low-to-super-high-power sectors. Let’s start with discussion of an LED family that touches several of the trends we mentioned in the opening paragraph. Seoul Semiconductor introduced the SunLike LED technology during the summer of 2017 with the architecture based on a violet emitter or pump in place of the more typical blue pump, and with a three-phosphor mix developed in partnership with Toshiba Materials. The spectral power distribution (SPD) mimics the sun and eliminates the blue energy peak that can potentially cause circadian issues for people exposed to the blue at night, and that some still believe is dangerous for the eye. Seoul recently released the results from research at a Korean medical school that associated working under SunLike LEDs wi...

Thermally rearranged (TR) polymers, which are considered the next-generation of membrane materials because of their excellent

Thermally rearranged (TR) polymers, which are considered the next-generation of membrane materials because of their excellent transport properties and high thermal and chemical stability, are proven to have significant drawbacks because of the high temperature required for the rearrangement and low degree of conversion during this process. We demonstrate that using a [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement, the temperature required for the rearrangement of a solid glassy polymer was reduced by 200°C. Conversions of functionalized polyimide to polybenzoxazole of more than 97% were achieved. These highly mechanically stable polymers were almost five times more permeable and had more than two times higher degrees of conversion than the reference polymer treated under the same conditions. Properties of these second-generation TR polymers provide the possibility of preparing efficient polymer membranes in a form of, for example, thin-film composite membranes for various gas and liquid membrane separation applications. Internal interconnected microvoids of polymers determined as free volume result from chain mobility and substantial packing disorder of covalently bonded polymer chains. Lately...

The 46 Best Shark Tank Products Under $25 On Amazon

Sometimes the most useful products come from smaller, independent entrepreneurs instead of the big brand name companies — but these products aren’t always easy to find when you’re just casually browsing through aisles. That’s where Shark Tank comes in. Not only does the show give a select few hopefuls the chance to team up with a successful investor, but they also get easy publicity for a product that the masses likely haven’t heard of before. Even the products that don’t get deals with the sharks can become wildly successful, and many of these genius products you can easily find right on Amazon. From a young kid pitching his dissolvable toy glue to the couple who came up with the fun wine glass that attaches directly to the bottle, there are hundreds of Shark Tank-approved products available on Amazon — but in an effort not to break the bank, I’ve also kept this slideshow to items under $25. Be warned: personal experience implores me to tell you that exploring Shark Tank products without boundaries can quickly lead to a hefty $300+ charge on your credit card, and while I choose to live my life with reckless abandon, I recognize that not every...

Ring vs Nest: it’s the clash of the cameras in a doorstep duel

Welcome to a clash of the titans. In the red corner there’s Ring, now owned by Amazon. In the blue corner, say hello to Google subsidiary Nest. Both firms can add HD eyes to your smart home in the form of video doorbells and security cameras, but there are some important differences between the two platforms. Both sets of products are designed to make your home more secure and more convenient. Video doorbells can tell you who’s at the door, while connected cameras enable you to see what’s happening in or around your house. Chic isn’t enough; today’s ‘it’ handbags must solve problems, too | fashion and trends

Handbags with organizational compartments aren’t known for being chic. They’re more the realm of busy soccer moms than fashion influencers. But with the ongoing popularity of athleisure and new social-media savvylines such as Dagne Dover and Caraa, convenience and functionality are a bigger partof the pitch to professional women on the go.Sales of traditional handbag makers in the U.S. were down 7% during the 12 months ending May 2019, says Beth Goldstein, analyst for fashion and handbags at research firm NPD. One bright spotin the industry—valued at $8.6 billion in the U.S.—are bagswith innovative organizational techniques.“The meaning of luxury is starting to change,” Goldstein says.“Consumers are responding to these brands that are solving problems. They are seeing a lot of value in that.” For instance, New York-based Lo & Sons specializes in a two-in-one tote called theSeville ($428), which has an interchangeable shell design to transform it into a travel bag. The Jemma handbag line, launched in 2015, features a model called the Emma($395) with pockets dedicated to every item you can think to put in a purse—a tablet sleeve, a phone pocket, a lipstick holder, a credit-card...

Battery-free, fully implantable optofluidic cuff system for wireless optogenetic and pharmacological neuromodulation of peripheral nerves

Studies of the peripheral nervous system rely on controlled manipulation of neuronal function with pharmacologic and/or optogenetic techniques. Traditional hardware for these purposes can cause notable damage to fragile nerve tissues, create irritation at the biotic/abiotic interface, and alter the natural behaviors of animals. Here, we present a wireless, battery-free device that integrates a microscale inorganic light-emitting diode and an ultralow-power microfluidic system with an electrochemical pumping mechanism in a soft platform that can be mounted onto target peripheral nerves for programmed delivery of light and/or pharmacological agents in freely moving animals. Biocompliant designs lead to minimal effects on overall nerve health and function, even with chronic use in vivo. The small size and light weight construction allow for deployment as fully implantable devices in mice. These features create opportunities for studies of the peripheral nervous system outside of the scope of those possible with existing technologies. Pharmacology and optogenetics represent two distinct, and often complementary, approaches that are widely used in neuroscience research (1–10). Optoge...

From glow-in-the-dark sets to stormtrooper onesies, kit out your kid in the best gear for a good night’s sleep If you’ve ever gone shopping for kids’ pyjamas, you’ll know just how much choice there is when it comes to kitting out your little ones for bedtime. From character onesies to pyjamas that glow in the dark, you can buy all manner of fun-filled sleepwear for children. But while a nifty set of nightwear might (we said might) help make the bedtime routine run a little more smoothly, the real question to ask is how well will it wash? There are few things more annoying than a new pair of PJs that end up as ankle-swingers the very first time you launder them. If you buy your child nightwear emblazoned with the latest cool character or hip slogan, trust us when we say you’ll hear all about it if you find out the hard way that the groovy print cannot be tumble-dried. So, before you invest in kids pyjamas, make sure they are easy to care for. Beyond that, comfort is king. Your child won’t thank you if they can’t sleep because of an itchy pair of PJs. In terms of fabric, 100 per cent cotton ticks all the boxes as it’s soft, cosy and affordable. Organic cotton costs a little...

Berlin 2019: Recurve finals line-up, preview and predictions

There are 16 spots for recurve archers at the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Moscow – eight for men and eight for women. Twelve of those are decided. Two go to the host nation, Russia. The last two are still up for grabs – and are dependent on the results of the gold medal matches at this, the fourth and last stage of the circuit in Berlin. One of the Korean reserve women will bag a spot after their final. And Turkey’s Mete Gazoz, who was named breakout archer of the year after winning this stage in 2018, is not only representing his interests at this tournament… …because while he’s certain to qualify for Moscow, if Mete wins the match, he sends Kim Woojin to the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final as well. It’s not often that two-time World Archery Champion Woojin has his competitive destiny left in somebody else’s quiver. This is arguably the most important match of the weekend. These young Korean women may only be on the reserve team – but one of them is headed to the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final. World number one Kang Chae Young won both of the first two stages of the tour. An San or Jeon Ina will join her. An San was runner-up at the World Archery Youth Champi...

A spraying expert says potential spray drift is a significant concern and payloads will likely be too small to be productive
Drone sprayers have been used in Pacific Rim agriculture for more than two decades, and they gained California certification four years ago. But do they have potential beyond the orchard gate? Probably not, at least not in the foreseeable future, according to Tom Wolf, also known as the Nozzle Guy, in a recent post to his Sprayers101 Agrimetrix website. Drone advocates say a drone can access problem topography or saturated soil where your self-propelled sprayer cannot go. True, but those are the areas you can’t farm anyway. Your tractor, seeder and combine won’t enter those areas, so why should your sprayer. He said a drone payload is relatively small. With those small payloads, application volumes will be too low to have any sort of productivity. “While OK for spot spraying, it represents a serious productivity constraint for anything larger. There will be a push towards lower volumes, perhaps 0.5 to one gallons per acre. The only way these will provide sufficient coverage is with finer sprays, (American Society of Agricultural and Biotechnical Engineers...
