At the 2018 electronica exhibition in Munich, John Hendricks, product marketing manager for Rogers Corporation, discussed 5G materials including demands and trends. Pete Starkey: John, it’s great to see you again. Thank you for sparing the time to join us. It’s been a very active show, and everybody I’ve spoken to has been very complimentary about it. One of the main talking points this week has been 5G. From your point of view, as a specialist supplier of materials, where are we going with 5G, and what are the implications of 5G for your company? John Hendricks: Rogers is a company that makes printed circuit board materials, but most specifically, high-frequency PCB materials. We tend to approach things from the high-frequency point of view. If you look back at previous generations of telecommunications systems—2G, 3G, 4G—there were many technological developments along that path and evolution. In terms of high-frequency PCB materials, not much has changed. A power amplifier was a power amplifier, and an antenna was an antenna. The materials used in 2G also tended to get used in 3G and 4G. Also, the frequencies were very similar. However, 5G is different from ...

The most-read stories on The Union Democrat website in 2018 involved tragedy — fire, flood and a doctor on trial for manslaughter — as well as the auction of cars and a story that appeared in 2017 about a Groveland man’s father whose life story was featured in a best-selling book. Here’s the list of the 10 most-read stories with updates on what has happened since the stories were published: Reports from ground zero of the most destructive days of the weeks-long Donnell Fire stirred emotions and memories for generations of people and descendants of early visitors who first stopped at the fishing and hunting mecca called Dardanelle Resort since it opened in the 1920s. Forest Service investigators have not released a cause of the fire, which cost at least $36 million to fight. It was declared contained Nov. 28. A limited number of firefighters made a stand that August afternoon at Kennedy Meadows Resort & Pack Station, which had been evacuated. Members of three engine crews and about 15 employees wrapped Kennedy Meadows Resort, a cabin that dates to the 1880s, in silver reflective material. There were 277 personnel assigned to the Donnell Fire as of 11 a.m. Aug. 6 and that was...

We have robots that can walk, see, talk and hear, and manipulate objects in their robotic hands. There’s even a robot that can smell. But what about a sense of touch? This is easier said than done and there are limitations to some of the current methods being looked at, but we’re developing a new technique that can overcome some of those problems. For humans, touch plays a vital role when we move our bodies. Touch, combined with sight, is crucial for tasks such as picking up objects—hard or soft, light or heavy, warm or cold—without damaging them. In the field of robotic manipulation, in which a robot hand or gripper has to pick up an object, adding the sense of touch could remove uncertainties in dealing with soft, fragile and deformable objects. Quantifying touch in engineering terms not only requires the precise knowledge of the amount of external force applied to a touch sensor, but you also need to know the force’s exact position, its angle, and how it will interact with the object being manipulated. Then there is the question about how many of these sensors a robot would need. Developing a robot skin that could contain hundreds or even thousands of touch...

What one action do all mattress producers need to take to keep their mattress manufacturing equipment in

What one action do all mattress producers need to take to keep their mattress manufacturing equipment in good working order? Implement a robust program of preventive maintenance, leading machinery suppliers say. A well-designed program includes inspecting equipment regularly, replacing worn parts before problems occur and conducting any necessary service, such as lubrication, sharpening or re-calibration, on a consistent, timely basis. The benefits of such a proactive approach are multifold, equipment suppliers say. Maintenance helps keep machinery in good working order for current production while also heading off problems—and potential breakages—that may occur down the road. “Preventive maintenance should be the motto of all factories,” says Costas Georgallis, founder and managing director of Amelco Industries Ltd. in Nicosia, Cyprus, whose line includes roll-pack, baling, frame, mattress-packing and pillow-filling machines. “Producers should always follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and not wait until a breakdown to repair and maintain their machines.” The cost of unplanned maintenance includes decreased production, higher costs for parts and shipping, plus lost...

Badged a GLC350e, the plug-in hybrid SUV makes its debut on Tuesday at the Frankfurt International

Badged a GLC350e, the plug-in hybrid SUV makes its debut on Tuesday at the Frankfurt International Motor Show and should be at dealerships within the first half of 2020. Outside the United States, Mercedes will also add a plug-in hybrid version of the GLE with a diesel engine for an extra efficiency kick. We’ll also receive a plug-in hybrid GLE, though with a gas engine. The powertrain of the GLC350e is comprised of a 2.0-liter inline-4 and an electric motor-generator integrated with a 9-speed automatic transmission. System output is 315 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, or enough for 0-60 mph acceleration in about 5.6 seconds. Drive is to all four wheels as standard. The electric motor-generator, which also serves as the engine’s starter, is able to recover energy under braking and store this in a 13.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. Mercedes quotes a range of 30 miles on a full charge of the battery, though this is measured on the lenient NEDC cycle. An EPA-rated electric range will likely come in below 20 miles. For buyers opting for the GLC’s Multimedia Package, the GLC350e plug-in hybrid powertrain benefits from route-based operation, where fact...

Know Your Potential Starting Relays ACHRNews logo ACHRNews logo

Knowing the sequence of operation for this type of starting relay can help you diagnose, confirm, or rule out certain service problems. Potential starting relays consist of a high resistance coil and a set of normally closed contacts. The coil is wired between terminals 2 and 5, with the contacts between terminals 1 and 2. Terminals 4 and 6 are used for capacitors and/or condenser fan connections and have no electrical significance to the starting relay itself, as shown in Figure 1. In fact, terminals 4 and 6 are sometimes referred to as “dummy” terminals and are simply used for wire connections.Figure 2 shows how a potential relay is wired to a capacitor-start/capacitor-run compressor motor. Notice that the relay coil is wired in parallel with the start winding and the start capacitor. The run and start capacitors provide the phase shift for starting torque because their capacitances add up when wired in parallel. In fact, both capacitors are wired in series with the start winding and in parallel with the run winding. The run capacitor limits the current that will pass through the start winding when the motor is running, because they are wired in series. The run capacitor also ...

An overall healthy diet should mean you’re getting lots of nutrients. So what are the skin-loving wonder-workers we should be looking for? Vitamin C is great for anti-ageing as it helps create collagen that keeps our skin firm. Vitamin E, another rich antioxidant, protects skin from free radical damage and can be effective in getting rid of acne. Another blemish-battling vitamin is D, as it plays a big role in fighting infections. Vitamin K, meanwhile, is a circulatory-booster that tackles dark areas on your skin like undereye circles, scars, and spider veins. Vitamin B3, a derivative of which is niacinamide, is fantastic for reducing redness and is a top skin-brightener. Two other complexion-perfecting ingredients to keep your eye out for are choline and folic acid. Choline is a brain-boosting vitamin that’s also important for healthy skin cells, while folic acid is vital for the creation of new cells, and improves skin’s firmness by boosting collagen. Sometimes our busy lifestyle...
