Lebanon Hezbollah warns protests could lead to chaos, war

The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah group said Friday that nationwide protests against the country’s political class have been exploited by foreign powers and were no longer spontaneous, warning they could drag the country toward civil war. Hassan Nasrallah’s comments came shortly after his supporters clashed with anti-government protesters in central Beirut. His supporters rejected the protesters equating the powerful group’s leader with other corrupt politicians they want to see step down. A popular refrain in the rallies, now in their ninth day, has been: “All means all.” The unprecedented nationwide protests that began Oct. 17 were triggered by proposed new taxes, including on the use of the WhatsApp mobile application. They came on the heels of an austerity budget that cut public spending, pensions and employee benefits to tackle a deepening economic crisis. Protesters took to the streets in the capital Beirut and in cities in the north and south in some of the largest protests in nearly 15 years. The rallies have brought together Lebanese from all groups and sects against politicians who have been in power since the country’s civil ...

Strains & products How to deal with Apple’s App Store vape purge Leafly StaffNovember 15, 2019   Share   Share on Twitter   Share on Facebook   Print (hakule, Anson_iStock/iStock) As of this morning, more than 180 apps related to vaping were banished from the iOS app store. The newly absent apps include those used to set temperatures and times on high tech, app-connected vaporizers like the Pax 3 and DaVinci IQ.  If you have a vaporizer app on your iPhone or other Apple device right now, don’t delete it if you ever want to be able to use it again. Apple’s banishment of the vaping related apps was first reported by Axios, and follows a decision by the company earlier this year to stop allowing new vaping apps in the App Store. Now, it seems that policy has been extended to booting existing apps. The silver lining for current users of app-enabled cannabis vaporizers is that apps already installed on mobile devices will stay installed and functional, and users will conti...

The Apple Watch Series 4 takes heart monitoring to next level

Its new EKG feature isn’t active at launch, but the Apple Watch is already proving to be a game-changing home health monitor. It’s not often that the announcement of a new iPhone — let alone three of them — is overshadowed. But by the end of Apple’s big fall hardware event on Sept. 12, it seemed like the new Apple Watch Series 4 had stolen the show. Four years and five versions since its September 2014 unveiling, the Apple Watch isn’t just among the best-selling smartwatches, it’s said to be the top-selling watch brand, period. And for 2018, the company is leaning in to that success with its first big redesign to date. The Series 4 boasts a thinner body, a bigger screen, a faster processor and — on the high-end model — a stronger LTE signal, so you can leave the iPhone at home on those early-morning runs. But the price tag of new models has edged up, too, with the new model starting at $400. So how is Apple enticing existing users to upgrade — and new users to take the first-time plunge? Simple: It’s making the Apple Watch a must-have health companion with a first-ever built-in electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG). By adding ...

When it comes to digital evidence, body-worn cameras are only the beginning

Motorola’s new Si200 bodycam pairs with its CommandCentral Vault software for more efficient management of video and other digital evidence Agencies that have deployed body-worn cameras have discovered that the pitfalls of a BWC program most often lie not with the devices the officers use in the field, but with managing the video and other digital records the devices create. Video files can be huge compared to most other computer records, and storage is expensive and cumbersome. Keeping the video data accessible and connected to other case data is often problematic, as the video and other data frequently reside within separate systems or even separate storage devices. This is where a unified digital evidence management system, such as CommandCentral Vault from Motorola Solutions, can be a force multiplier for law enforcement. Vault integrates video from bodycams and associates relevant data, including RMS data, as it is created, linking dispatch logs, still photos, voice recordings and other case information into a structure easily accessed and searched by investigators and prosecutors. Correlation of video evidence to CAD and RMS data compiles all the content related to an inci...
