Update on the water main replacement project in Enterprise

ENTERPRISE, Al. (WTVY) — The Enterprise Water Board gave an update on their water main project to the city commission earlier Tuesday afternoon. Phase one of the water main replacement project in enterprise is nearing completion 11 months after it began. “It included replacing miles and miles of old dilapidated water mains” said Alan Mahan, field superintendent for the Enterprise water board. The first phase has focused on the lines that posed the biggest threat of damage and leaking throughout the city due to old age. So the city is replacing the old galvanized piping with PVC piping which has a longer life expectancy. Mahan says “PVC has been around since 1970. So there’s been lines in the ground since that time. Life expectancy, I would say at least a hundred years.” Most of the streets are located near downtown Enterprise, including W. Brunson Street, N. Reed Street, and Cook Street. The alleys on the East and West side of Main Street are the last piece of the first phase to be completed. “The two things is water quality and savings on repairs and cutting down your unaccounted water” Mahan concluded. Additive manufacturing of cellulose-based materials with continuous, multidirectional stiffness gradients

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) enable applications in fields such as biomedicine and architecture, but their fabrication suffers from shortcomings in gradient continuity, interfacial bonding, and directional freedom. In addition, most commercial design software fail to incorporate property gradient data, hindering explorations of the design space of FGMs. Here, we leveraged a combined approach of materials engineering and digital processing to enable extrusion-based multimaterial additive manufacturing of cellulose-based tunable viscoelastic materials with continuous, high-contrast, and multidirectional stiffness gradients. A method to engineer sets of cellulose-based materials with similar compositions, yet distinct mechanical and rheological properties, was established. In parallel, a digital workflow was developed to embed gradient information into design models with integrated fabrication path planning. The payoff of integrating these physical and digital tools is the ability to achieve the same stiffness gradient in multiple ways, opening design possibilities previously limited by the rigid coupling of material and geometry. Functionally graded material (FGM) has grad...

This is the future and we live in a world of 3D printers and laser cutters.

This is the future and we live in a world of 3D printers and laser cutters. Have you ever pondered the question of getting yourself a laser cutter? Well [Erich Styger] just landed a 50 Watt Laser Cutter from AliExpress and has written up a detailed guide to his experience. [Erich] had been wrestling with the idea of buying one for himself for some time but was put off by the difficulty in their operation. This changed when [Scorch] published the K40 Whisperer control software which allows for better control over these machines. With the hopes of an interesting weekend project, [Erich Styger] took a leap of faith and spent $900 on a model 4040 laser cutter. In his blog, he goes through the steps in setting up the machine as well as calibrating the laser. With a plethora of images and a detailed look at each aspect of the leveling and testing, [Erich Styger] had a weekend well spent and a working K40 laser cutter for his workshop. But perhaps the more valuable part of the stories is the overall experience. It was not a “what you see is what you get” order, but it did turn out to be a hacker’s “what you want is what you get” adventure. The machine didn’t look the same as the pictur...

Best electric hand mixer that is powerful, compact and easy to use

While there are all manner of gadgets available to tempt a keen cook, an electric hand mixer is one of the more essential kitchen items.  From making light work of beating egg whites to even kneading dough, hand mixers are foolproof culinary aids, particularly when it comes to whipping and aerating. They take up far less space (and cost fewer pennies!) than a countertop mixer, too.  While hand mixers vary across the market, from the most basic to high-tech gadgets, it’s clear that many are now so adept at the task in hand that they can rival most larger countertop counterparts. Many also offer great value for money, coming with a number of additional attachments such as whisks, dough hooks and beater attachments. When testing, we looked for a number of criteria, including models that were easy to grip and control (not so light the mixer and batter went everywhere, not so heavy to be cumbersome or arduous), more powerful than a standard hand-held whisk, easy to use and easy to clean. We also looked at aesthetics, size, sound and storage. In the interest of fairness, we made the same shortbread batter with each hand mixer. While this was slightly larger than some of the models we...

Security camera streams in 4K, has 180-degree field of view

The Good The Ultra improves on Arlo’s last-gen indoor/outdoor security cameras with 4K streaming, auto-zooming and -tracking and a larger 180-degree field of view. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant — and has person, package, vehicle and animal detection. Arlo gives Ultra customers a free one-year subscription to the Arlo Smart service. The Bad It costs $600 for a two-camera pack. Its 4K resolution takes up a lot of bandwidth and may not mesh well with your current Wi-Fi setup if your connection is spotty. The seven-day free cloud storage Arlo offers on its other cameras is not available with the Ultra. The Bottom Line Arlo’s Ultra camera impresses with advanced features and solid performance, but the high price won’t work for everyone’s budget. Assuming your home’s Wi-Fi meets Arlo’s minimum requirements for streaming 4K cameras, the Ultra is an awesome camera with video streaming crisp enough to make out even the finest details.  It packs in other advanced capabilities, too, like customizable motion zones, person detection and auto-zooming and tracking, all of which worked well during my testing. The main downside is the price &...
